NEW Song by Savannah Lathem
"Gonna Make a Change"
Featured in the movie HELL ON THE BORDER. A movie based on the true life story of Bass Reeves, a legendary tough African American cowboy in the Wild West.
Savannah was determined to write songs but didn’t learn to play an instrument until she was seventeen years old. She quickly discovered she needed to learn to play some type of musical instrument in order to get the music and lyrics to describe the songs she passionately wanted to express that danced around in her head.
It was then she decided to choose Piano as her musical instrument. Learning to play piano seemed like an almost impossible undertaking at her age, but she was determined to learn. She was introduced to a professional piano teacher, Louahn Lowe, who met with her and much to Louahn’s surprise, she quickly discovered Savannah was incredibly gifted in music. Savannah recalled actually laughing when Louahn told her the very first Prelude she would learn would be a Classical Solo from the great Composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. Within four weeks, she was performing the entire Prelude and reading sheet music. This event led her to learn advanced Preludes & Sonatas by composers such as the great Franz Shubert, & Ludwig van Beethoven and others.
When she learned her first Solo composed by Bach, she did not have a standard key board and only imagined hearing and playing the other key notes in her head. Her first time to play Bach was on Louahn’s Baby Grande and when she played all the musical notes for the first time; Savannah said that it felt great to finally get to play all the keys on a real standard piano! Louahn was shocked! Savannah began writing originals without learning cords and once she learned cords more songs poured out of her like rain. She was always a shy, closet singer song-writer, and only family and a few friends knew she wrote originals, or sang.
In 2019 she booked a small role in an Independent feature film, Hell On The Border; written and directed by Wes Miller. She instantly fell in love with the script that was a Biography based on Bass Reeves’ life. Hell On The Border, stars David Gyasi, who portrays the struggle Bass Reeves experienced becoming the first African American U.S. Marshal. The Producer,
Curtis Nichouls, began to notice Savannah’s talent while on set In Birmingham, AL. Curtis asked Savannah to write a song for the movie once he learned she was a singer song-writer. She wrote the music and lyrics “Gonna Make A Change” within two weeks and recorded with Jimmy St. James, Music Producer. The Producer and Director loved her song so much they placed it in the film. Hell On The Border is with Lionsgate Distribution.
